Understanding the 90/180-Day Rule for Foreigners in Turkey

Under Turkish Law No. 6458 (Law on Foreigners and International Protection), foreign travelers entering Turkey with tourist visas or under visa-exemption regimes are subject to the 90 days within any rolling 180-day period rule. Both entry and exit dates count toward the days spent in Turkey.

How the Rolling 180-Day Window Operates

The 90-day allowance does not reset on January 1st. Turkish border authorities and the Directorate General of Migration Management (Göç İdaresi) apply a backward-rolling 180-day window from any given date of stay. Foreign nationals planning to remain longer than 90 days must submit an online residence permit application (e-ikamet) before their lawful visa stay expires.

Special Note on the 60+30 Rule

Citizens of certain nations—most notably the Russian Federation—benefit from visa exemption for up to 90 days in 180 days, but uninterrupted stay on a single entry cannot exceed 60 days. To utilize the remaining 30 days, travelers must exit and re-enter Turkey before day 60 expires.

Overstay Consequences & Entry Ban Tahdit Codes

Exceeding your permitted stay results in administrative fines at border control. Leaving without paying the fine or prolonged overstays trigger automatic entry bans ranging from 3 months to 5 years (Restriction Codes Ç-114, Ç-141) and potential deportation proceedings under Article 54 of Law No. 6458.
